Wood fueled district Heating

Wood Fuelled District Heating, True Heat have been exploring the viability of providing wood fuelled district heating systems to rural communities in Dorset. This can provide a low cost, environmentally sustainable way to heat homes. For areas not served by gas and with a sufficient density of housing, a small scale wood fuelled district heating system will provide lower heating bills.

How does it work?

(Sustainable Energy Across the Common Space)

Background information

Poole Tidal Energy Parthership

Transition Poole is driving an initiative to secure funding under the national Energyshare project (managed by KEO films) for a study of the potential for hydro electricity generation from the double tide which flows in and out of Poole Harbour each day.

Levels and Moors Energy - Somerset

Nature

This project aims to support community groups, small organisations and businesses in the Somerset Levels and Moors area with local renewable energy and low carbon schemes.

Bindon Mill Screw Turbine Installation

Nature

A 20 kW screw turbine was installed at the historic mill site of Bindon Mill. The site is on the River Frome near Wool on the Lulworth Estate. The estate has a record of good environmental stewardship.

Blandford Forum Parish Centre

The much loved, much used Victorian pre-fabricated Church Hall which served the community of Blandford for over 100 years became disused, dilapidated and beyond economic repair.

The Hall Steering Group (HSG) gained planning permission to replace the existing structure with a new, purpose built, environmentally friendly facility which would be available 7 days a week throughout the year for the community to use. No such facility existed in Blandford.

BREG becomes BESCo

This project and attached case study describes the establishment of an Industrial and Provident Society for the benefit of the community, and its relationship with the Bridport Renewable Energy Group. The purpose of the IPS was to raise money through share issues within the community, to invest the money in renewable energy schemes for the benefit of the community, and to manage and distribute the income.

Setting up the Bridport Renewable Energy Group

The group was born out of a series of fireside meetings that took place late in 2004. After about a year it became apparent that for the group to develop it would be necessary for at least an individual to step forward as leader. Looking around there was no-one wishing to put his or her head above the parapet and so the group went into abeyance where it remained for about two years. The individuals were still around in the community, and kept in contact with each other, but no one felt able to take on the task of organising meetings. Meanwhile Dorset Community Action had created the opportunity for one individual to do voluntary work, and was wishing to compensate the parent organisation BREG for the individual’s time.

Communties for Renewables

Regen SW is working with partners to establish the 'Communities for Renewables’ initiative.

In keeping with the 'localism' agenda and in response to the increasing number of enquiries from local communities in the region, in June 2010 Regen SW launched a new initiative to support and bring together communities in the south west interested in developing renewable energy projects.
