The Child Okeford Sustainability Initiative comprises people living in Child Okeford and Farrington who are
concerned that the twin threats of environmental change and peak oil will affect our way of life and who
are seeking local solutions to minimise that change.
The initiative is part of a loose grouping of other green organizations in North Dorset.
The purpose of COSI is to:
• Find out how important environmental issues are to local villagers
• Identify areas of particular concern to villagers
• Facilitate access to projects that address these concerns
• Identify funding sources
• Encourage participation in projects and events which tackle various aspects of environmental
change both in the local and wider area
• Promote a greater sense of community
• Make links with other like-minded organizations
So what have we done so far?
• Co-operative pig ownership – five families in Child Okeford shared the husbandry of four pigs and
were rewarded for several months of trudging through ice and snow to feed and water them with a
freezer full of top-quality, organic pork. Fresh eggs are now the reward from a small flock of shared
chickens.
• A COSI Affair – an event to promote sustainable energy solutions including solar power, natural
insulation and woodchip wood burners. Speakers included Rob Buckley of the Dorset Centre for
Rural Skills and Anthony Walker from the Energy Reduction Consultancy
• Joined the Green Map
What are we planning for the future?
• Fun children’s craft activities – ‘art from junk’
• A community veg patch
• An early autumn Green Party – a celebration of foraged, home reared or home grown food
• Bulk buying for natural insulation
• A ‘Green Card’ entitling holders to discounts on selected green products and services
