LETSystem, Dorchester & South Dorset (Local Exchange Trading System)

A based in Dorchester, Dorset working in Consumer Issues

Aims

The project is providing a way for people to trade goods, skills and services with each other by means of a simple bartering system where members can exchange skills, services and time without the need for cash, helping those in work, the unemployed, school-leavers, senior citizens, single parents, new business ventures, small businesses, shops and community groups - the list is endless.  Is a sociable economy based on friendship.

About

Dorchester and South Dorset LETS is looking for new members to join this local exchange and trading scheme helping people swap services without using money.

The scheme covers Dorchester, Weymouth and Portland and surrounding villages.  It offers another way to beat the credit crunch by enabling members to ‘buy’ and ‘sell’ services using their own local currency called “marts”.

LETS members are trading goods and services that range from DIY, gardening, household maintenance, child and pet sitting, to computer assistance, massage, hairdressing, complementary therapies, organic food and holiday homes.

The idea behind LETS is that everyone has something they can offer and by exchanging goods and skills with friends and neighbours it enables people to acquire services they may not be able to afford otherwise or simply have the time to do themselves.

Core Group Co-ordinator Katy Murrell said:  “This is a great way to get the help you need, support local people to use their skills and make new friends as our trading events are good fun too!”

So far this year members have been busy trading ironing, dog walking, furniture repairs, gardening, small DIY projects, carpentry, tiling, floristry, computer repairs, osteopathy, yoga, massage, reiki and purchasing books, dishes, chocolate cakes and beeswax!
