Bournemouth is quite a young town, only 200 years old. There are around 150,000 residents with a diverse mix of ages, cultures and wealth. It is a coastal town and relies a great deal on tourism, not just because of the lovely beaches but also because it is positioned next to the New Forest on one side, the Isle of Purbeck on the other, and lovely rural Dorset to the north and west. Bournemouth benefits from having a number of head offices for financial services companies, a large university, a thriving language school sector, and a large NHS presence. Bournemouth is the only town in the UK to sign up to the Earth Charter, with its stringent sustainability principles.
The Transition Bournemouth group is in the 'mulling' stage of development, ie we are not yet an official Transition Town. Thanks to funding from some local councillors we have screened some films for awareness-raising evenings in the Boscombe West ward, and are now looking for further funding to pursue this in other wards. Other projects in the pipeline are a swishing evening and a series of seasonal food evenings. We are also on the lookout for any opportunities for community food production.
Transition Bournemouth currently meet every third Thursday of the month in Chaplins Bar on the main Boscombe road (Christchurch Road), BH1 4AG, from 7:30pm.
All welcome.
