Transition Poole is driving an initiative to secure funding under the national Energyshare project (managed by KEO films) for a study of the potential for hydro electricity generation from the double tide which flows in and out of Poole Harbour each day.
The energy needs of Poole are significant and this highly predictable source of power is literally on our doorstep.
Making use of this vast expanse of predominately shallow water for electricity generation presents some unique challenges which must take into account the needs and aspirations of many diverse groups representing leisure, wildlife, marine and commercial interests.
Transition Poole are working alongside Bournemouth University to investigate the possibilities for development of novel solutions; dependent on the outcome of tidal measurements and feasibility studies.
We have expressions of interest in this project from several organisations including:
- Poole Council;
- Poole Harbour Commissioners;
- Carter Community School;
- DEAC - Dorset Energy Advice Centre;
- Poole Housing Partnership;
- East Dorset Friends of the Earth;
- Association of Sustainability Practitioners (ASP);
- Rockley Park - Caravan Holiday Park; and
- Business Link
To secure funding, we must first demonstrate significant public interest in our project.
